From Management’s Point of View ~An Environment for Employee Growth ~

July 25, 2024

In the previous issue, I shared my experiences about the kind of environment employers should create for their employees. This time, I’d like to summarize what kind of environment employees themselves find desirable, which I learned through beer bash.

Opportunities to Improve Skills

  • Employees feel a sense of joy and accomplishment when they realize they can do something this year that they couldn't do last year, or when a task that took 40 hours last year now takes only 20 hours. This sense of growth is also the most reliable way to build a career. Below is the summary of what our employees expect from the company on improving skills:

  • Comprehensive in-house training programs, as well as opportunities to participate in external training.

  • Opportunities to take on tasks that are slightly more challenging than their current skill level.

  • Chances to try out work in other fields they are interested in.

These points emphasize that employers bear in mind that a company must always provide opportunities for employees to enhance their abilities.

Respectable People in the Workplace

Having supervisors who teach and support employees when they're in trouble provides a sense of security and motivates them to grow further. This is especially important for less experienced staff who often feel anxious in various situations. When assigning new tasks, supervisors should clearly communicate future prospects to support their subordinates’ motivation. Additionally, subordinates observe how well their supervisors embody the company’s philosophy (like TOPC Axis in our company). Supervisors must show their commitment to growth before expecting the same from their subordinates.

Company Growth

When a company is in decline, employees naturally feel anxious. Employees can work confidently only when they see their company continuously growing and expect a bright future. Management must develop strategies to ensure revenue and profits and consistently implementing them.

Moreover, such strategies should be openly shared with employees so they understand where the company stands. It is also crucial for companies to engage in new challenges, such as developing new products or services and entering new markets beyond existing business boundaries. While top management must adopt a challenging mindset, it is equally important to listen to employees' ideas and openly accept good ones. This inclusive atmosphere helps the company progress to the next level.

Beyond business strategies, the key to a company’s growth is for each employee to recognize that their work is the foundation of the company’s success. Employees should understand that enhancing the scope and quality of their work directly contributes to the company’s growth and take ownership of their roles. This sense of ownership is vital for both employee and company growth and is a source of pride for me when I see it in our employees.

Fair Compensation

Although it didn’t come up from employees, I felt it necessary to add this point. Many companies increase profits by keeping regular employees’ salaries low so they can pay high wages to top executives. But in such an environment, can employees stay motivated and perform well? Naturally, employees want to work for a company that fairly evaluates their contributions and reflects this in their compensation.

As a business owner, I am motivated to create a company that can pay good wages to hardworking employees. Given the reality of fluctuating business conditions and budgets, it’s never an easy task, but we strive to maintain fairness and transparency by sharing and explaining our financial statements to employees every six months.

Over the past two issues, we’ve explored what constitutes an environment where employees can grow. Ultimately, nothing is more critical to growth than “each individual’s ownership of their work”.

No matter how well a company supports training, fairly evaluates employees, and offers good compensation, if employees do not strive for growth, neither they nor the company will advance.

Conversely, history shows that remarkable figures like Konosuke Matsushita in Japan and Thomas Edison in America founded world-leading companies despite limited formal education.

Growth is possible regardless of the environment, depending on one’s attitude. What I want to convey to our employees is that your passion for growth is the most crucial element for your development, while I make best efforts to provide opportunities for you to thrive within our company. It is the combination of management providing the right environment and employees putting forth their best efforts that leads to the greatest growth for both the company and its employees.
